AT&T is the second biggest wireless carrier in the United States after Verizon Wireless, with over 73 million subscribers. AT&T was called Cingular Wireless upon its inception in 2001, but changed it’s name to the current in 2007, to reflect its parent company.

Despite ranking only the 5th largest network in the US, Alltel Wireless is the largest among regional carriers, with 12.2 million subscribers in 35 states. Update: Alltel Wireless has been acquired by Verizon Wireless.


Sprint/Nextel

2005 saw a merger between Sprint and Nextel. Combined, the merged network is the third largest wireless carrier and second largest CDMA carrier in the United States to date. Sprint offers unlimited calling plans to subscribers. It was the second major carrier to offer 3G (EV-DO) network.


Tmobile

Tmobile is the second-largest GSM carrier in the United States. It was originally founded as VoiceStream Wireless in 2001, until VoiceStream was acquired by Germany’s Deutsche Telekom. In comparison to the country’s three other telecommunications giants, Tmobile carries one of the smaller networks, although it has roaming agreements with AT&T and other small operators.

Verizon Wireless prides itself in being “the most reliable network in the nation”. Verizon is an offshoot of the Verizon-Vodafone alliance. It has joined the ranks of the nation’s leading prepaid phone providers with it’s Verizon INPulse service.

AT&T/Cingular Go Phone

AT&T acquired the Go Phone upon its acquisition of Cingular in 2007. It remains the no. 1 network provider in the US today.

Tmobile To Go Plans

T-mobile also offers FlexPay, which requires users to sign a contract and earn a subsidy. A Sidekick plan is also available for the popular brand of messaging phones.

Boost Mobile Plans

Boost’s pay-as-you-go plan offers $0.10/minute calls all day. Push-to-talk is also available at $1/day, as well as wireless web for $0.35/day of access.
